"The National Park Service at Age 100," The National Park Service (NPS), sometimes described as "America’s Best Idea," is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2016. The NPS set aside sites that are particularly beautiful or scientifically or historically significant and made them available to the public on a scale unprecedented in world history. Although spectacular places in western states and coastal regions might initially come to mind, some of the nearly 500 NPS sites are in the Midwest.
Accomplished cultural geographer Norman Moline will present highlights of NPS history and then focus on sites in Illinois and adjacent states. This event is being produced in part by Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, a program that provides organizations statewide with affordable, entertaining, and thought-provoking humanities events for their communities.
